A Radler is made by combining lager or beer with lemonade. Radlers are therefore the perfect thirst-quenchers and are particularly popular during the summer months. The name of this refreshing drink is said to be derived from the German word Fahrradler (cyclists) and has its origins in Munich. There, at one point, a pub was overrun with so many cycling tourists that it seemed they would not have enough beer. The owner of the pub then came up with the idea of mixing beer with lemonade. The fact that the 'lemonade beer' contained less alcohol was a bonus; people remained more sober, which resulted in fewer accidents on the way back. Radler beers without alcohol

Unlike fruit beers, where the fruit is co-brewed, Radlers only have lemonade (usually lemon lemonade) added after the lager or beer is brewed. The average Radler has a 50/50 ratio, although there are also variants available that contain slightly more lager/beer and a little less lemonade, or vice versa.

Previously, Radlers without alcohol were often made by removing the alcohol from the lager/beer after the brewing process. Nowadays, existing alcohol-free lagers or alcohol-free white beers are mainly used, to which the lemonade is then added.

In 2013, Amstel was the first Dutch beer brewer to launch a Radler. That was an immediate success; it did not take long before other beer brands also launched their own Radler beers. Experiments with new flavours are on the increase, and more and more completely alcohol-free Radler beers are gradually becoming available.
